Grimsby`s young defender Matthew Bird has signed a professional contract to stay at Blundell Park until 2010

Bird had to end a trial with Manchester United earlier in the season due to injury and has been attracting the attention of other clubs.

Town`s youth coach told the Official Site: ‘He’s a lad that we have had since the start of our under 11’s side.

‘He’s got great potential. He’s 6’1’, left-footed, got good pace, and I think that it is the right move at this time for Matthew and for us.

‘His attitude to work and learn has been terrific.”

He continued: ‘He attracted a lot of publicity with his offer to go and train with Manchester United.

‘He’s had a lot of problems with injuries but hopefully he’s next in line to follow the Ryan Bennett’s, Andy Taylor and Danny North’s.

‘I think he’ll only get better from this moment and with training with the professionals every day.’
