The Mariners completed a 3-0 victory over Frickley Athletic in soggy conditions last night. The home side will feel a little aggrieved given Josh fullers smart finish was boosted by two own goals, but in all honesty the better side won on the night.

The football in patches was a pleasure to watch with Bradley Wood continuing his lively preseason and Connell coming on and offering a pleasing albeit cameo performance. Wood may miss Boston on Friday as he joins the growing list of players picking up knocks in the last two games.

Cummins (who looks useful coming forward), Coulson and Peacock linked well and although Arthur was hardly overworked he did everything that was asked of him including a couple of smart saves. His handling looked sound too given the wet conditions. Colgan appears back on the scene and appeared for the last 25 minutes.

The Codfather pushed Bore forward last night and started Coulson as a central striker. Both he and Connell when he came on showed some nice touches that bode well for later in the season. Garner also had a commanding game, having our first half chance, albeit a weak one and then clearing one off the line at the death.

So to the lifeblood of our favourite sport, the goals. On 35 Coulson turned his marker and fed Peacock who duly pranced. However with the ball caught under his feet he teed up young Josh Fuller who showed he is willing and able to take the step up with a nonchalant flick over the advancing keeper. Keeper Nicklin got it right to deny him his brace moments later.

With the Mariners tiring in the heavy conditions it took a second courtesy of a slice of luck to wear down a lively, physical opposition forward line. On 56 minutes Bradley Wood crossed only for the hapless Heath to hammer the ball into the roof of his own net. Pick that one out the lobster pot!

A triple substitution saw Hegarty on for Fuller and the arrival of Colgan and Connell who connected with one that should hopefully come back in with tomorrows tide. He redeemed himself with some great touches including one to Hegarty, who managed blaze so high he was signing post match autographs ‘Johnnie Wilkinson`. A cute Connell chip moments later was barely 3 foot wide with their keeper left high and dry.

Frickley`s Fisher showed us how it is done by heading home our third and the hosts second OG of the evening. Mind you he had time – there wasn`t a Mariner anywhere near him.

Codfather Comments – the game
“Thankfully it wasn’t a boiling hot day and the rain meant they could move the ball around a bit. They tired after 60 minutes but they got through. Thankfully, barring Bradley Wood’s knock in the last minute, there are no new injuries to report.”
“I still don’t think we got control of the game well enough. Credit to Frickley, they were very competitive. There were odd signs and little movements starting to come together.”
“We’re still a long way off football-wise.”

Codfather on Connell

“Alan has only had two training sessions since he returned after summer so we have to be careful with him – however much we want him out there playing. We want him right for August 14. He had three shots and was involved in most of the play around the penalty box.
“He’s a very clever footballer and the fitter he gets, the better he’ll be for us.”

“Without a shadow of doubt, the best player in the first two games has been Bradley Wood. I think anybody would agree – the boy has been outstanding so far. He’s come back in great condition after a lot of personal problems last year. From our point of view it’s great to see him back playing like we know he can.”
