Grimsby started the season today with an home game at Blundell Park against Rochdale.

New signings Robbie Stockdale, Matthew Heywood, Richard Hope, Chris Llewellyn and loanee Simon Heslop all make the league debut with the Mariners while former Mariner Ciaran Toner started on the bench for Rochdale.

Town started well and got a couple of crosses in, one coming from Hope but was caught by Rochdale keeper Sam Russell and the other came from Andy Taylor but was cleared by Adam Rundle.

Rochdale won a free kick after a foul by Tom Newey on Adam Le Fondre. The free kick was taken by Rundle and found Gary Jones who tried a shot but the ball took a deflection and went out for a corner. Rundle sent the corner to the far post where Heywood managed to clear the ball.

Martin Butler got the first shot of the game in after 20 minutes but his attempt was blocked by Russell and went out for a corner. Peter Till sent the cross in but Rory McArdle cleared the ball.

Chris Dagnall then got a shot in for Rochdale but Stockdale was there to block the ball before going out for a corner. Rundle took the corner and passed a short ball to Scott Wiseman and he sent a cross in but Heywood cleared for the Mariners.

Rochdale were given another corner and it was taken by Clark Keltie but was cleared by Hope only to Simon Ramsden who sent in a cross and this time the ball was cleared by James Hunt.

The referee blew the whistle to break a fairly decent half to an end but their was not much in the way of goal mouth action.


Rochdale started the second half well and Rundle sent a cross in and the ball was cleared by Heywood before Kennedy sent a cross in but this time Town keeper Phil Barnes caught hold of the ball.

Barnes cleared the ball out before Le Fondre got it and snet a shot in but his effort from 25 yards was saved by Barnes.

Martin Butler then had a shot for the Mariners but sent the ball wide before Grimsby won a corner. Till took the corner and sent it to the far post to Heywood and he tried an header but the ball was blocked by Ramsden.

Rundle then got a shot in on 52 minutes but sent the ball wide and the score remained goalless.

Rundle then got another shot in 2 minutes later but this time was deflected away by Barnes before the Mariners went on the break a Butler got a shot in but the ball was caught by Russell.

Grimsby made a change after 62 minutes when Andy Taylor was replaced by Danny North.

Rundle then got another shot in for the Dale but could only send it wide.

Both Butler and Rochdale`s Nathan Stanton were booked for unsporting behaviour after 66 minutes.

Rochdale wee given a corner and the kick was taken by Keltie but the ball was comfortably caught by Barnes.

Martin Butler latched onto a bad backpass to get a shot in but it was saved by Russell and the game remained goalless.

Rochdale made their first change on 75 minutes when Kallum Higginbotham came on to replace Scott Wiseman.

Hope was then booked for a foul on Dagnall before a couple of minutes later an header from Dagnall was caught by Barnes.

The Dale then made a change on 84 minutes when Le Fondre was replaced by Lee Thorpe.

Butler then sent the ball over the bar with just 5 minutes of normal time remaining.

Rochdale were looking dangerous has the game approached full-time and Thorpe sent a shot wide.

Rundle got a shot in during the 3 minutes of added time but sent the ball wide before the Mariners made a change with Butler being replaced by Peter Bore.

The final whistle came to bring the game to an end and the Mariners will be pleased to keep the clean sheet.
