Grimsby were at home in a midday kick off against Chesterfield and a single goal from Ward gives the Spireites a one-nil victory, leaving The Mariners still looking for their first league goal of the season.

Jamie Ward was first to get a chance in for the visitors when he had a shot go wide and within a minute he got another shot in but the ball was blocked by Ryan Bennett.

The Mariners then went on the attack and Andy Taylor tried a shot but the ball was blocked by Robert Page to go out for a corner. Chris Llewellyn took the corner but it was cleared by Aaron Downes.

Grimsby continued to put Chesterfield under pressure and got a few more shots in, Simon Heslop tried a shot from around 20 yards but Jamie Lowry blocked the ball and it went out for a corner.

Llewellyn then tried to give the Mariners the advantage but sent his shot over the bar before a shot from James Hunt was blocked by Alan Goodall.

Jamie Ward was looking dangerous and got a shot in after 25 minutes but his attempt was blocked by Matt Heywood before he had another shot that was saved by Town`s keeper Phillip Barnes.

Chesterfield then won a corner and it was taken by Darren Currie to the centre of the area where Ward tried a shot but Barnes managed to save it.

Chesterfield were starting to put the Mariners under pressure and Lloyd Kerry had a shot go wide before Jamie Lowry sent the ball over the bar.

Grimsby managed to get forward for Hunt to shoot but Chesterfield`s keeper Trevor Carson caught hold of the ball.

With 3 minutes of the first half remaining Chesterfield took the lead. A cross from Currie found Ward and he kept his shot low and put it into the goal. GRIMSBY 0 CHESTERFIELD 1.

The ref brought the first half to a close and the Mariners would need to do better in the second half if they are to get anything out the game.


The Mariners had a free kick early in the second half when Robert Page was judged to have handled the ball. Heslop took the free kick but it hit the wall.

Alan Goodall was then shown the yellow card on 50 minutes for a foul on Peter Till. Llewellyn sent the kick into the area but Carson caught hold of the ball.

Llewellyn then had a shot but could not get it on target and the ball went over the bar.

A corner was awarded to Grimsby and a chance to try and get an equaliser but Llewellyn`s corner to the near post was cleared by Lowry.

Currie then tried a shot but the ball was blocked by Heywood has Chesterfield looked to try and extend their lead..

Chesterfield remained on top and Ward got another shot in but it was blocked by Heywood.

Downes got a shot on 62 minutes but could only send it wide of the goal. The Mariners then made a change with Chris Llewellyn going off for Danny Boshell who was getting is first game of the season has he comes back from injury.

The Mariners managed to get forward and Nick Hegarty got a shot in but Carson caught hold of the ball.

Chesterfield`s Paul Harsley was the second player to go in to the referee`s book for a foul on Heslop. Boshell then took the free kick and the ball it the wall and fell back to Boshell and he tried a shot but sent the ball wide.

Chesterfield then made a change on 75 minutes when Alan Goodall was replaced by Phil Picken. Simon Heslop was then substituted for Danny North 4 minutes later has Grimsby looked to try and get a equaliser.

Andy Taylor got a shot in with less than 10 minutes remaining but sent the ball over the bar.

Derek Niven then sent a shot in but could only send the ball wide of Barnes`s goal.

A third yellow was shown to another Chesterfield player with only 2 minutes of normal time remaining. Lloyd Kerry brought down James Hunt for a free kick to the Mariners but they could not do anything with the kick.

Chesterfield then made a change when Jamie Lowry was replaced by Gregor Robertson before the Mariners made a change with Peter Till coming off for Peter Bore.

There was three minutes added on at the end but the Mariners could not produce that equaliser and are still looking for there first goal in the league this season.
