Grimsby Reserves lost last night 5-1 to a tough and experienced Sheffield Wednesday team.

Danny North and Nathan Jarman played well together in the first half and had chances to put Town in the lead. And a tackle at the last minute denied North the chance to shoot and put Town in front.

Sheffield Wednesday also had chances with some long range efforts and a few headers by Akpo Sodje.

Etienne Esajas put Wednesday 1-0 up after going on a solo run down the left and putting the ball past Gary Montgomery.

Town kept Wednesday at bay for the remainder of the first half and went into the break only 1-0 down, but Wednesday came out a lot better in the second half.

Wade Small scored and then Luke Boden put Wednesday 3-0 up, before Small scored again to give Wednesday a 4-0 lead. Then Yoann Folly scored from a long range effort to make it 5-0 to Wednesday.

Town had a chance to pull one back after Normington crossed into the area and Hegarty close range effort was saved by the Wednesday goalie O`Donnell.

Minutes later Town got the consolation goal, when Normington did another cross into the area and was met by Hegarty`s foot for him to blast it into the net.

This was always going to be a tough game for the Mariners, with Wednesday playing in the Championship and having an experienced squad to bring, there will also be more tough games for the Reserves, with a few other clubs in the Pontins League also playing in the Championship.

Teams that the reserves will face this season include: Barnsley, Sheffield United, Leeds United and of course rivals like Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United. So it looks like a tough season for the Reserves.

Town: Montgomery, Parker, Lowe, Clarke, Courtley, Bore, Burge, North, Hegarty, Normington, Jarman, S Davis, L Davis, Emson, Rhodes, Ashton

Wednesday: O`Donnell, Liversidge, Gilbert, Lunt, Hinds, Beevers, Small, Folly, Jeffers, Sodje, Esajas, Kay, Pratt, Lekaj, Boden, Bradley.
