Veteran defender John McDermott has revealed he is optimistic of an early return from an ankle problem.

The Mariners stalwart sustained the injury in last week’s 4-1 win over Rochdale and looked destined for a long lay-off. But X-rays have only revealed a severe sprain.

‘Dave Moore [physio] said it could just be three or four weeks off with the injury,’ McDermott explained. ‘Hopefully that’ll be the case and it seems to be going really well. The swelling has gone down ? obviously it’s still slightly bruised, but once that goes I’m looking to get a bit of jogging done.’

Elsewhere, young goalkeeper John Lukic saved a penalty for Grimsby’s second-string as they held Darlington’s reserves to a 0-0 draw in their Pontin’s League clash on Monday night.
