Town’s Andy Parkinson opened up the scoring on 8 minutes with a beautiful goal set up by Junior Mendes to provide the travelling Mariners faithful with a little breathing space in the first half, that is until the 34th minute when Tony Bedeau foiled the Grimsby defense to smash the ball home.

On the hour Gary Jones had a headed goal disallowed after the referee judged him to have pushed a defender.

In the 81st minute Tom Newey’s freekick provided Paul Futcher with a simple header home to notch up his first goal for the Mariners but in the 89th minute Torquay’s Martin Phillips beat Town’s defense and passed to allow Tony Bedeau to get his second and the equaliser.

All in all it was a scrappy game in which Torquay looked more threatening than the team 19 places above them. The Mariners were lucky to have drawn the game but it came at a cost. No less than five Grimsby players received yellow cards throughout including Ben Futcher who has reached 5 yellow cards for the season resulting in a one ame suspension to be served next Tuesday as the Mariners travel to Stockport.

Full report coming soon.
