Watkiss will sign a new one-year contract with the club when he returns from holiday, a just reward after his sterling work with the reserve team and the young professionals at the club.

Although having had no previous contact with Watkiss when he returned to the club last November, Buckley was prepared to see how things worked out with the ex-Mansfield boss and is naturally pleased with the outcome.

With the two striking up a strong working relationship, Buckley was delighted that his right hand man had decided to sign up for another year in Cleethorpes.

‘Stuart was basically unknown to me, other than him being manager of Mansfield when I was at Lincoln,’ Buckley told the official site.

‘When I came back to the club in November he was assistant manager, Graham had appointed him.

‘I had a chat with Stu and decided to see how things went.

‘He’s been a joy to work with, he understands the game, he knows what to expect from me.

‘I’ve found his assistance invaluable.

‘So I’m delighted that he’s staying for another year.
