Watkiss arrived at the club last summer as Graham Rodger’s assistant after his promotion to the managerial position.

Although Rodger’s reign was an ill-fated one, the decision to bring in the former Mansfield and Kidderminster boss looks to have proved a great piece of business.

During his year at Blundell Park, Watkiss has transformed Town’s reserves from a side that failed to register a single win the season before last into one that only missed out on their league title by goal difference to Rotherham.

As well as the impressive results for the second string, Watkiss has also helped mould the likes of Peter Bore, Andy Taylor, Danny North, Ryan Bennett and Nick Hegarty into first team players.

Whilst the signing may seem unspectacular with Town fans hoping on a player signing up today, the new contract for Watkiss could prove one of the most important this summer.
