Watkiss will put pen to paper on his new one-year contract when he returns from his family holiday after a good first season with the Mariners.

Although things turned sour with the sacking of the man who brought him to the club, Graham Rodger, Watkiss has gone from strength to strength with his reserve side missing out on their league title on goal difference alone to Rotherham.

Enjoying life at Blundell Park under the leadership of Alan Buckley, Watkiss had no hesitation in agreeing to a new contract.

Having learnt from Buckley in the seven months they’ve worked together, Watkiss will now look forward to further picking his bosses brains as they look to guide Town towards promotion.

‘I’m absolutely delighted to be staying for at least another year,’ he told the Grimsby Telegraph.

‘I just can’t wait for the new season to start and get back into it again.

‘I’ve really enjoyed working with Alan (Buckley).

‘He’s very experienced and I’ve learned a lot from him in such a short time.’
