31-year-old Lester looked all set to sign for Walsall after entering talks with Saddlers boss Richard Money over the weekend.
However the chance to stay in the Nottinghamshire area and the offer a three-year deal proved too much for the ex-Town frontman as he agreed to drop into League Two for the first time in his career.
Lester was far from short of offers after his release from Nottm Forest last month with Chesterfield boss Nicky Richardson delighted to have captured his man.
‘I am delighted Jack has agreed to join us as he is a quality player who had other options apart from Chesterfield,’ Richardson told the club’s official website.
‘I wish to thank the chairman and the board for making this exciting signing possible.’

What a fantastic coup for Chesterfield!
Indeed Sandy, he is still a decent striker and will score goals for the Spireites!
Despite his age, this player is still a very good player and a proven goalscorer. well done
i think after jack had seen a club like forest there was no way he was ever coming back to grimsby..you need pride in a shirt to wear it..grimsby will get promoted this season without paying players over the top wages..up the mariners
i have happy memories of visiting grimsby’s ground when chelsea clinched the old 2nd division title there on the last day of the season nearly 25 years ago. if lester chose chesterfield above grimsby then its his loss – not grimsby’s
