McDermott brought the curtain down on his lengthy playing career earlier this month in the final game of the season away at Shrewsbury, ending his 20 year service with Town.

Originally it was thought that Macca would have a coaching role at the club saved for him, that now appears to not be the case with the club, quite rightly, refusing to create a position just for the sake of it.

Keen to stay in the game and with his coaching badges in hand, the Middlesbrough born adopted Grimsbarian is hopeful of his chances at York Street, although admits his lack of experience could be an issue.

‘I am applying for the Boston job – there’s nothing to lose,’ he told the official site.

‘I may not have any experience but have my coaching badges up to UEFA ‘A’ and am keen to stay in football.

‘My playing days at Town may be over now but I still want to stay in the game.

‘There will be a lot of candidates who have more experience but I thought ‘why not go for it and send my application.

‘It’s a gamble but we’ll see what happens.

‘I may not have the experience but I have good contacts in the game after 20 years.

‘At least it gets my name out there and lets people know which direction I want to go.

‘We will just have to wait and see what happens – hopefully my application will seriously be considered.

‘People like Paul Ince have shown you can go in and do it so why can’t I’

Boston are without a manager following Steve Evans resignation last weekend to join Crawley Town after the clubs relegation from the Football League.
